SA blitzes again at track national titles

06 Feb 2018

SOUTH Australia returned home from the Cycling Australia track national titles in Brisbane with a swag of medals and top dog billing again among the Australian states.

Backing up from its win last year, the SA team, mainly consisting of SASI scholarship holders, graduates and High Performance Unit athletes, turned in an outstanding exhibition of power and skill from start to finish of the four-day event.

Champions Matthew Glaetzer and Steph Morton provided the highlights of the competition with dominating performances.

Glaetzer won the men's champ of champs after grabbing a clean sweep of all four sprint titles (first time a rider has won all four events at a nationals since Shane Perkins in 2009), while Steph Morton shared the women's title with Amy Cure (Tasmania) after snaring three titles.

SASI Cycling Head Coach Brett Aitken said it was another great result for the athletes and the SA team.

''There were so many highlights but to win the Cup again just backs up the strength of our program,'' Aitken said.

''Matt and Steph were very good in the elite area but we had a number of young riders like Carlos Carisimo, Heather May who won four medals in her first year of under-19s, Luke Wight, Leigh Hoffman and Josh Harrison who won his first senior individual gold medal, who performed well along with many others.

''The event was fantastic and was one of the best run. We had incredible help from our staff at the track and behind the scenes''

Gold medal winners in the sprint events were Glaetzer, Morton, Hoffman, James Brister, Pat Constable, Tom Clarke, Rikki Belder, Heather May and Brooklyn Vonderwall. In the endurance discipline riders Harrison, Breanna Hargrave, Annette Edmondson, Alex Manly and Maeve Plouffe took out gold.

SASI's next main cycling commitment will be the Oceania road titles in Tasmania near the end of March.
