New cycling laws come into force

Changes to road rules setting a minimum distance for overtaking cyclists and allowing all age cycling on footpaths took effect over the weekend.

Key changes include:

  • Motorists must allow 1 meter clearance from cyclists when travelling under 60kmh
  • Motorists must allow 1.5 meter clearance from cyclists when travelling over 60kmh
  • Cyclists permitted to ride on footpaths
  • Motorists permitted to cross double lines (when it is safe to do so) to overtake cyclists
