SASI divers going to Glasgow

17 April 2014

Rachel Bugg

The Diving Australia Commonwealth Games Trials were held in Melbourne last week, which included SASI divers Rachel Bugg and Anna Gelai - with both athletes being selected onto the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Team, 23 July to 3 August.

Rachel competed in both platform events, winning the women's 10 metre synchro with partner Melissa Wu (NSWIS) and placed 4th in the final of the individual women's 10 metre, after performing well in 2 of the 3 preliminary, semi-final and final rounds.

Mike Martens, SASI Head Diving Coach, said "there was an expectation that Rachel would make the team but she had to execute her dives well to gain selection, so it's pleasing to get her selected onto the team".

Springboard diver Anna Gelai competed in the women's 3 metre synchro event with partner Esther Qin (NSWIS) and placed 2nd in a tightly contested event and also performed well in the women's 1 metre event. Martens said, "Anna made a big commitment to relocate to Adelaide over a year ago and this was a real opportunity for her to make her first senior international team, there was a lot of pressure going into the meet and she delivered on the day."

The team for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games was announced yesterday in Melbourne with a total of 12 athletes, including Rachel Bugg and Anna Gelai, being a fantastic result for South Australia.  "This is the first Commonwealth Games representation for both athletes and we're aiming to contribute three medals to the team," Martens said.
