First International medal for SASI diver

6 June 2014

Medal for SASI diver

Junior SASI diver Matthew Carter took home a silver medal from his first international competition in the boys 3m springboard event at the International Youth Diving Meet in Dresden, Germany, 24-27 April.

Matthew, who has been on the SASI squad less than a year, also finished fifth in the 1m event and ninth in the 3m synchro event with Western Australian Joshua Ong.

SASI Assistant Coach Christian Brooker, who coaches Matthew, said the 13-year-old has learned a lot in the past six months, especially in regards to competing.

"The dives Matthew is doing are at an elite level," said Brooker. "His performance in Dresden gave us a good indication of his international standing."

SASI Head Coach Mike Martens echoed Brooker, saying, "Matthew is a great young prospect and very strong for his age. He's learning difficult dives at an early stage and he used them well in the competition. He's basically doing a man's list on 1m. This is a great result for his first time representing Australia."

Matthew will now set his sights on the World Junior Championships in Russia in September. In order to qualify he will have to finish in the top two at any event at the National Elite Junior Championships in June in Sydney.
