Tallent walks to bronze

SASI athlete Jarred Tallent secured a bronze medal in the men’s 50km walk at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup held in Taicang, China on 3 May. He finished with a time of 3:42:48, just minutes behind Russians Mikhail Rhyzov (3:39:05) and Ivan Noskov (3:39:38).

The three-time Olympic medallist said he was happy with the first part of his race but struggled at the end.

"I went out with the Russians and made a move at about 15 kilometres to push the pace up but they were too strong in the closing stages," he said.

While disappointed at not being able to overtake Rhyzov and Noskov for the win, he was pleased at the comfortable lead he had over fourth-place finisher Russian Yury Andronov (3:43:52).

Tallent's bronze medal finish at the event means his medal-winning streak continues. He's won seven medals at every major race walking championship since winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli in 2010.

His sights are set on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, as racewalking is not included in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
