Adelaide velodrome better than new after long break
After more than a decade lying idle and dilapidated, a much-loved western suburbs velodrome is poised to return to its glory days.
The Hanson Reserve Sports Stadium, at Woodville Gardens in Adelaide’s inner west, is at last back in action, thanks to a comprehensive $1.3m upgrade. (The Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing contributed $240,000 through the 2015-16 round of the Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program.)
The velodrome’s track has been completely resurfaced, new lighting installed, safety fencing added, plus other works completed.
The overhaul means that Cycling SA and the Kilkenny and Port Adelaide Cycling Clubs can finally return to their former home base at the venue (the only outdoor velodrome in Adelaide’s northern suburbs).
First on the groups’ agenda will be a resumption of their junior development programs.
Those not into competitive cycling won’t miss out however. It’s envisaged that the velodrome will also act as a community hub, so outside of training times and cycling competitions it will be open to everyone - amateur and recreational cyclists, naturally, but also those who prefer skateboarding or even scootering.
Those without wheels, but still wanting some fun, are also catered for: among the new works completed as part of the project is a new playground!
