New turf rollout has Kadina cricketers cock-a-hoop

The installation of new turf at Kadina’s cricket/footy ground has put the Yorke Peninsula town in the running for a SANFL game next year.

The turf, on the ground’s centre wicket area, was laid during an intensive two-month period last summer, in readiness for this summer’s cricket season.

The Office for Recreation and Sport contributed $14,000 through Round 41 of the Active Club Program.

The project was completed through a number of phases: excavation of the pitch area, laying (and laser-levelling) of a new clay base, installation of an irrigation system, addition of the ‘top dressing’ layer, and finally, rolling out of the new turf.

The grass was established and ready to go in plenty of time for the 2017 football season, ensuring players had a firmer, more even and safer playing surface.

The Kadina Cricket Club says its players will benefit, since they too will now have a safer – and more authentic – pitch to play on. It’s hoped this will translate into greater development of player skills, especially in those just starting out in the game.

And yes – Kadina has been shortlisted for an SANFL game in 2018 – something that would not only be an absolute coup for the town, but previously wouldn’t even have been thinkable if the old concrete pitch was still in use!
